When formatting a new hard-drive with the Windows operating system, it is strongly recommended that you insert your Windows installation media and follow these steps: 1. Boot from your Windows installation media and select “Repair Your Computer” from the recovery options. 2. Select “Command Prompt” and enter "C:\\windows\\system32\\sysprep" 3. Type ‘sysprep /oobe /generalize /shutdown’ (without quotes) 4. Remove DVD or CD from drive, then restart computer 5. After reboot, you should see the black screen with white writing that says "Windows Setup". Select “Next” 6. Enter your Product Key 7. Select “Next” 8. Enter the Product Key again, then select “Finish” 9. Once Windows loads, select "Start" -> "All Programs" -> "Microsoft Windows Update" to check for updates 10. You may or may not have updates to install. You can now continue using your computer without reformatting it. If you do decide to reformat, you will lose all your personal data, documents, pictures etc. Make sure to backup any data you wish to keep prior to proceeding with the next steps. Warning: If you make a mistake entering the Product Key during Setup (or if it's invalid or has already been used), then Windows Setup might not be able to activate itself online and will fail installing, with no error message or explanation offered. In this case, the only solution is to start over from scratch (i.e., completely erase your hard disk, and then install and activate Windows again). 1.
